Singapore CNN —A Chinese boarding school designed to let students unwind and “waste time mindfully” has been named 2023’s World Building of the Year. A few steps into his early-morning run, Purushottam Sahu struggled to breathe. Overhead, a thick brown-gray haze blanketed the sprawling forest park in New Delhi where he and other joggers, yoga enthusiasts and dog owners were keeping to their daily habits despite official warnings against exerting themselves in the toxic air. “We are all jogging faster toward death,” said Mr. Sahu, 46. “Because we have no other choice.”Every year in the late fall, as air pollution in the Indian capital climbs to noxious extremes, the government takes emergency measures like closing schools, restricting traffic and banning construction. But for the region’s 30 million inhabitants, life must go on, and for many in this urban expanse of lush parks and morning strolls, that means trying to remain active.

The Biden administration is still concerned about environmental, social and governance standards in Indonesia and is examining how a deal might work, the sources said. "There's a lot of work to do before we are able to formally announce negotiations on a critical minerals partnership," the person said. Indonesia does not have a free trade agreement with the United States. The only U.S. nickel mine is set to close in a few years, and the country has no nickel smelter, a risk to Biden's goal for the United States to lead in EV manufacturing. Many U.S. miners have said that the Biden administration should focus more on approving domestic projects than seeking international supply.

… The earth is screaming at us," Washington state Governor Jay Inslee said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." Washington state is switching to electric-powered ferries and stopping the sale of internal combustion cars after 2035, said Inslee. Palm Springs Mayor Grace Elena Garner, who also spoke on "This Week," highlighted the need for further resources from the federal government. She emphasized more funds for housing development are needed to ensure residents don't have to live outside in worsening environmental conditions. The U.S. must lead the climate fight "not just from a moral standpoint, but from [its] self-interest standpoint," Inslee said.

Scientists found that male rhesus monkeys have sex more frequently with other males than females. This behavior could provide the monkeys with an evolutionary edge over heterosexual counterparts. The researchers reported 72% of the 236 male monkeys either mounted, or were mounted, by other males, whereas only 46% participated in heterosexual sex. Moreover, these male monkeys weren't strictly homosexual. Gay sex in male monkeys is partially heritableBy using genetic tests and family trees, they found that same sex behavior was 6.4% heritable.

Chicago area gig workers who use Walmart's delivery platform Spark say bots are a growing issue. They say users who deploy bots make it harder for them to make enough money on the platform. It's unclear exactly how prevalent bots are on Walmart's Spark platform. Workers who fill orders for multiple apps, from Instacart to DoorDash, have used — and complained — about bots for years. Gig workers can set bots to claim specific orders, such as those with delivery addresses close to them.

As a science fiction writer, Butler forged a new path and envisioned bold possibilities. Mural with a portrait of Octavia Butler and her name, composed of dots of various densities in 3-D space. In 1995, she became the first science fiction writer to be awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant. “‘Kindred’ was a story of ordinary people trapped in fantastic circumstances,” Butler wrote in a 1988 notebook. Her point of view was one not traditionally found in science fiction and, simply by writing, she demanded a larger world.
CNN —Sleeping in a room exposed to outdoor artificial light at night may increase the risk of developing diabetes, according to a study of nearly 100,000 Chinese adults. Urban light pollution is so widespread that it can affect suburbs and forest parks that may be tens, even hundreds, of miles from the light source, the authors said. “Studies have suggested that inconsistent sleep patterns have been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes,” he said in a statement. Blood samples were collected and compared with satellite imagery of light levels in the area of China in which each person lived. The analysis found chronic exposure to light pollution at night raised blood glucose levels and led to a higher risk of insulin resistance and diabetes.

Eight Pine-Sol disinfectant cleaning products are being recalled over fears they may contain infection-causing bacteria, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Tuesday. The Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaners, CloroxPro Pine-Sol All Purpose Cleaners, and Clorox Professional Pine-Sol Lemon Fresh Cleaners produced at a plant in Forest Park, Georgia, may contain the natural bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause infections in those with compromised immune systems, the commission said in a statement. Clorox, the parent company of the Pine-Sol brand, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin," it said. Included are the Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave and Lemon Fresh scents of Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaners; the Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave, Lemon Fresh and Orange Energy scents of CloroxPro Pine-Sol All Purpose Cleaners; and Clorox Professional Pine-Sol Lemon Fresh Cleaners, the commission said.
